Logo and Banner Design March 9, 2010 at 5:54 am

Logo and banner design, like web site design play an integral part in creating the image and the brand for your company. Although the main purpose of banners is as advertising tools, they can be made in such a way that they will help to promote your company’s brand online. As both banner and logo design are important pieces of design work for your company, I will break this article down into 2 parts:

1. Logo Design

Logo design is vital when you start your company, regardless of whether you are starting your company online, or will initially operate offline. Logo’s play an integral part of your company’s brand, and you logo appears on everything from business card and letter heads to e-mail signatures and any company merchandise that you offer. Therefore it is vital to get your company logo correct from the start, as changing it later can cost a lot of money.

When designing a logo for your company you need to look at 3 major factors:

1. Uniqueness of your logo – This is vital, as the more unique your logo is the more recognizable it will be to others. If you have a logo that is similar to someone else’s, you run the risk of helping to boost their brand both online and offline.

2. Recognizable logo – you need you logo to be recognizable, as it will help to boost your brand, both online and offline. Also the further you develop your brand, and the higher the trust rating you develop online and offline, the higher the status of your brand and its logo will be.

3. Aesthetically relevant – just because it is your logo does not mean that it should match your tastes. A logo is the first impression many people will have of your company, whether through an e-mail signature, or a business card given out. It is therefore important that the look of your logo reflects the type of company you run.

Once you have looked at these factors, it is time to choose the other aspects of your logo. Color can often be an important factor that many people do not take into account. It is important to be sure that the color of your logo matches both the mood of your company, as well as the design of the logo.

As I mentioned above when designing a logo remember it is often the first impression that people will get of your company as a whole, and therefore needs to be designed to match not only the company and the industry it represents, but also needs to reflect the type of company that you run.

2. Banner Design

Banner design does not carry the weight and importance of presenting your company as your logo does, and many times your logo will be integrated into your banner anyway. Although the above statement is true, banners play a far more vital role in advertising and brand building than your logo does. Although brand building is designed at developing your brand and making your logo recognizable as part of your brand, the initial introduction to your brand for many customers will come from your advertising banners.

When designing banners there are 2 major factors to take into account:

1. Contents of your banner – unlike text ads, most banner ads nowadays are flash banners, and contain multiple frames. This allows you to use a banner ad more like a television advertisement than a traditional text ad. This means that you can structure the contents of your banner around a plan like this: Introduction: a brief introduction to your company -> Benefits: the benefits your company offers -> Action: What action the customer should take. This allows you to also structure the actual design of your banner around what you want your banner to say.

2. Reason for your banner – the reason why you are producing the banner in the first place also plays a vital role in the design that the banner will take. If you are using the banner solely for brand building, then less action words and colors will be used. However if you are using your banner to attract customers, you will use more action words and colors, like “Buy Now” or using the color green (it is though that subconsciously the color green is read as go).

Using the correct balance in these two factors will ensure that you banners will be designed to perform the task that you need them for.
